reflection week 3

This week was the third time I attend to “Resources” class. For this week, we had to form a six group. Each member had been chosen by Madam Foziah randomly. Each group will be given a topic to be discussed and then present. The topic was taken from chapter one in book entitle ‘Teaching English in the Primary Classroom’ (Susan Halliwel).

For the first chapter (Working with Young Language Learners), we learn that children do not come to the language classroom empty-handed because they bring with them an already well established set of instincts, skills and characteristics which will help them to learn another language.

There are 6 sub topics in this chapter. For group work, each group was given one topic to be discussed in group and then present to other groups. The subtopics are the qualities that help children in learning foreign language which are:

1. Children’s ability to grasp meaning.

2. Children’s creative use of limited language resources

3. Children’s capacity

for indirect learning

4. Children’s instinct fo

r play and fun

5. The role of imagination

6. The instinct for interaction and talk

My group was assigned to discuss and present subtopic number 5 which is “The Role of Imagination”. But because of time was not enough, my group has to delay our presentation to week 4.

"I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge - that myth is more potent

than history. I believe that dreams are more powerful than facts."

- Robert Fulghum

The quotation gives us some clues about the role of imagination. Imagination can be define as the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or not previously known or experienced. Children delight in imagination and fantasy. In primary school, children are busily making sense of the world around them. For example they identify pattern and also deviations in the pattern.

Language teaching should be concerned with real life, but it was a great pity if we were so concern on promoting reality in the classroom that we forgot that reality for children includes imagination and fantasy. The act of fantasizing, of imagining, is very much an authentic part of being a child.

If we accept the role of imagination in children’s lives we can see that it provides another very powerful stimulus for real language use. It is very important for us to find ways of building imagination in the language classroom. For example, by asking them to draw their imaginary pets and then write description about the pets. By that, we can stimulate the children’s creative imagination so that they want to use the language to share their ideas.

In conclusion, this week I learned that imagination gives very important role in child language learning.

reflection week two

This week is the second time we enter the resources class. The class was quite interesting and fun since it involve technology, which is something which able to create the feel of curious and motivation to learn in myself. Yes I admit that sometimes I feel nervous because I’m not too good in technology. Sometimes, I cannot avoid getting helpless and clueless. Although how blurry I am during the class, it cannot stop me from become motivated to learn this course, since the lecturer had opened my eyes on how important this course for me as future teacher.

As assignment and tutorial, we had given a task to log into our blog and update of reflection and anything in the blog from time to time. Compare to pencil paper task, this task is triple times harder since I got zero basic on blogs. But, with some help from friends, a little of extra reading and a little focus during teaching, I was able to create the page which was more like made by a kindergarten children.

We also were given a questionnaire to fill in our particulars and some details about our prior knowledge on the use of internet such as the knowledge on editing audio files, videos, and photos. The questionnaire will help Pn Foziah, who is our lecturer to access on our previous knowledge and next decides on the lessons to be carried out for the coming days. After answered the questionnaire, I found that I was far left behind in technology. There are lots of applications that I don’t know how to use it and worst is, some of application that I don’t know and have no any idea about it.

For future, I need to learn the technology because I believe that technology is helpful in making teaching and learning process become more interesting and meaningful. Pupils will get very excited when the teacher applies technology during lesson. This may help in boost their motivation to learn.

I also was been introduced to lot of new things which had made me shame to myself and my friends. Although all of it was new and blur for me, it had create lot of curious and anxious to learn. Furthermore, it was waste to learn because I that all of them will help me a lot in future in ordertobe a great 21st centurt teacher.

first week reflection

After about four years learning in IPIK, we been transfer to University Malaya. The environment was so different. I felt I am alien coming from other planet.

During the first week, I had attended PBEY 3102 (Choosing and Using Resources for the ESL classroom). I totally had no idea on what I will going to learn in this course. But after seating and hearing a lecture from Madam Foziah, I found that this course will helps me a lot in future. This course explores current approaches to authentic and non-authentic materials development. The aim of this course is to familiarize the student with the principle for evaluating and developing materials to meet the diverse of learners. I found that this course is helpful in developing my skills of selecting, adapting, designing and evaluating materials for teaching ESL in the classroom. I find that I was motivated to learn the course since I realized that this course provide valuable knowledge for me in order to be a good teacher.

I admit that I wasn’t good in technology, but it never too late to learn new things. The feeling of curious had increased my motivation to learn.
